Answer:
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! As per the UNESCO world water development report, India is the largest extractor of ground water in the world, which is approx. 25% of the global ground water extraction.
Why dependency on ground water is more?
- Because of easily availability and accessibility.
- Lack of rules and regulation.
- No monsoon water storage management.
- Increased in the Unplanned Urbanisation.
- Agricultural dependency more on ground water because other option is not easily available. For instance, 89% of ground water exploited by agriculture.
Initiatives by the Government of India:
Jal Shakti Abhiyan: This was 100 days campaign to aware people to recharge ground water.
Master Plan for artificial recharge to ground water: In this plan, construction of about 1.42 crore Rain water harvesting and artificial recharge structures in the Country to harness 185 BCM.
Atal Bhujal Yojna: this plan is for sustainable management of groundwater with community participation.
Jal Jeevan Mission: under this mission, supply of 55 litres of water per person per day to every rural household through Functional Household Tap Connections by 2024.
Water Efficient Agriculture: Water-efficient irrigation systems like drip and sprinkler irrigation should be made mandatory.
Wastewater Management: Dual sewage system for grey water and black water and promoting reuse of the recycled water in agriculture and horticulture should be promoted.
Conclusion: Thus, whole of country approach is needed for the sustainable utilisation of ground water.
