Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Impact: Women’s vulnerability to climate change varies from a number of factors i.e social, cultural and economical.
- Lack of resources: Over 50-80 percent of world’s food production is dominated by women but they own less than 10 percent of the land.
- Women are caring gender, if diseases increase then the extra burden on women will make them more critical.
- In extreme events like Cyclones, floods, droughts; women tend to work more to secure household livelihoods which leaves less time for women to access training and education.
- Women have negligible participation in decision making, so they are less able to confront climate change.
- Due to climate change, women have to travel longer to get drinking water and wood for fuel.
Way forward:
- Follow the Gender-responsive approach.
- Addressing underlying social issues through awareness generation.
- Recognize the important contribution of women as decision makers, stakeholders etc.
- Ensure equal space and resources for women and men.
Conclusion:
Despite women being disproportionately affected by climate change, they are crucial to climate change adaptation and mitigation as they are still a largely untapped resource.
